Merry Christmas from Buster Brown!

Practically a century before that mischievous Calvin hooked up with Hobbes there was another young couple terrorizing parents everywhere, R. F. Outcault's Buster Brown and his dog Tige!

Buster Brown was created by Richard Fenton Outcault who practically created the American comic strip in 1895 with his Yellow Kid. Buster Brown was his second run at a successful comic strip, and successful it was.
I would like to celebrate this Christmas season with Buster Brown and Tige in "Buster Brown has a Christmas Tree".

In the 1900's and 1910's Buster Brown and Tige were as huge a phenomenon as Calvin and Hobbes are today. There was all kinds of merchandising and the Brown Shoe Company even took on Buster and Tige as their mascots.

R. F. Outcault must have thought all the merchandising was a bit much as well because he wrote a comic about Buster Brown himself being overwhelmed by his own merchandise. Check it out in "Merry Christmas Buster Brown".

It's easy to see what all of the hub bub was about when you read the comics. Buster has this enthusiasm for life and living that, no matter how destructive or troublesome, is contagious. Reading Buster Brown just gives me a smile on my face and makes me want to get up and go have some fun.

Check out all of the incredible merchandise here at the Buster Brown Mel Birnkrant Collection.
